BRISTOL - Minot-Sleeper Library, the historic public li- brary in Bristol, New Hampshire, today announces a partnership with StoryCorps, the nonprofit dedicated to recording, preserv- ing, and sharing the stories of Americans of all backgrounds
and beliefs. StoryCorps will pro- vide training, professional re- cording equipment, and ongoing programmatic support to the Li- brary, which will record conver- sations between area residents for inclusion in the StoryCorps archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Con- gress. The recordings will also be accessible to the public (with participant permission) at Mi- not-Sleeper Library. New Hamp- shire Public Radio will edit and broadcast select stories recorded
through the collaboration. StoryCorps gives everyday Americans the chance to record interviews with loved ones about their lives. In these 40-minute conversations, participants, with the assistance of a facilitator, talk about whatever is most im- portant to them. The recordings create a unique, first-person his- torical record for future genera- tions. Since its founding by Dave Isay in 2003, StoryCorps has re- corded over 600,000 Americans, making its archive the largest
collection of human voices ever gathered.
Minot-Sleeper Library’s part- nership with the organization extends its effort to preserve the
history of the Newfound Re- gion and celebrate the diversity of its community. This Spring,
StoryCorps will train 10 Mi- not-Sleeper Library staff mem- bers and volunteers to facilitate interviews, which will take place May through August.
Jennifer Davis, Library Direc- tor, said, “This is an amazing op- portunity for the community. We are hoping to highlight the diver- sity we have in our community, share stories on individuals while building bridges and alliances through our shared narratives.
This is an exciting project!” “StoryCorps recordings capture the poetry, wisdom, and grace that can be found all around us when we take the time to listen,” said Dave Isay, Founder and President of Story- Corps. “We are honored to col- laborate with the Minot-Sleeper
Library to celebrate the lives of its community members—and to preserve their stories for pos- terity.”
For NHPR Program Director Michael Brindley, this is an op- portunity to bring a community together. “The concept of unit- ing our towns and cities together through dialogue and knowledge is a prime belief of NHPR.”
