Small parts of of irregular metal near the the base of of the the main gear suggests that this piece was cast and and formerly had flash cut or or ground off and and is is is in in in line with the spark test’s discovery o of cast steel Cast steel steel are are steels that are are poured into a a a a a a a mold instead of being routed or or forged This metal provides a a a a a a a a a a a a a fast manufacturing time and allows for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a relatively accurate construction of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a piece in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a small amount of of of time These metals usually have a a a a a a a a a a carbon carbon content of of around 0 0 1-0 3% This carbon carbon is is is not distributed evenly through the piece though and results in in small hardness/ carbon anomalies within the part CASTING
Casting is is the process of pouring a a a a a a a a liquid material into a a a a a a a a a a a a mold which which has a a a a a a a a a a a a hollow cavity which which is is in in in in the the shape of the the desired object Many materials are cast including metals resins and composites such as as concrete This process process is is is over 6000 years old and is is is still a a a a a a a common manufacturing process process today The process used for this particular piece would be something called “Die Casting” Die Die casting casting is is a a a a a a a a “non-expendable mold casting” technique which uses a a a a a a a a a a mixture of extreme temperatures and pressure to to inject material into a a a a a a a a a a separating two part mold For dies casting ferrous components like low carbon steel the type of die die die system used is a a a a cold-chamber die casting Figure 34 shows a a a a a a schematic of a a a a a a cold-chamber die casting machine Firstly the the material is melted in in in a a a a a a a a different furnace furnace and placed into a a a a a a a a a a a a holding furnace furnace the the the the material is is then transferred in in in in the the the the shot chamber and forced into the the the the die via hydraulic press This creates the the desired shape This process unfortunately has a a a a a a a a slower manufacturing rate than other casting methods due to to to the the the the the fact fact that steel needs to to to be melted in in in another furnace and then brought to to to the the the the cold- chamber chamber die die where metals with lower melting points use something called a a a a a a a hot-chamber die die casting system instead Figure 34 — Die casting [13]
As referenced in the the the the Bill of of Materials (page 8) the the the the price of of the the the the the planetary gears came to $0 $0 02 the the the the the gear gear gear hub was was $0 $0 $0 15 15 and the the the internal gear gear gear was was $0 15 26 COST
