To make an endless loop in double-braid rope, you should allow four full fid
lengths of rope to accommodate the splice. (See page 12 for the relationship
between rope diameter and fid size.) Do not use double-braid for an endless loop
smaller than 2½ feet (750 mm) in circumference; for those splices, use three-
strand twisted, eight-plait, or twelve-plait rope.
For maximum strength of an end-to-end splice, it is essential that the smooth,
one-to-one relationship between coat and core be restored as completely as
possible. This can be difficult, but pounding on the rope with a wooden mallet
will loosen the strands and ease the job.
On each piece, draw the coat down over the working end of the core,
removing as much slack as possible from the coat. Cut each end so that the coat
and core are the same length, and tape to prevent unlaying.
Measure six full tubular fid lengths from each end and tie a slip knot.
