Be a Conversationalist
• Ask FACTS, i.e. Where were you born?
• Ask FAVORITES, i.e. What’s your favorite
________ (anything)?
• Ask deeper questions, i.e. If you could be any animal which would you be and why?
– Your activity/rec team has OODLES of resources for these type of conversation/discussion starters.
– Post around the building.
– Have cue cards at dining room tables.
• Observe for social dining atmosphere or individualized dining setting with staff sharing dining experience with residents (not standing over them). Observe for staff talking with residents, not talking only with other staff or ignoring residents. Observe for culturally appropriate meals.

• Staff interact/converse with residents rather than only with each other while assisting residents
• Staff sit rather than stand when assisting residents to eat
