Honoring Sleep Prevents Falls

• Sure enough “checking and changing”
• Createdagapofatleast4hoursbetweenmidnightand
4 a.m. where no residents’ sleep would be interrupted.
• Falls decreased significantly. As is common, the worry was skin breakdown but thankfully, there was none.
• Now the gap is 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. affording at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
• Utilizing longer wear incontinence products and the best practice of not moving resident if repositioned him/ herself.
Individualized Nighttime Care
• Residents are more awake, alert, and able to participate in life during the day.
• Now fewer falls during the night than during the evening or daytime.
• Preventing falls prevents accidents and assists to be in better compliance with Tag 323 Accidents.
