        USING THE CHECKLIST

           more than one clause is used.

        ◆ Check spellings of frequently misspelled words.
        ◆ Vary your sentence structure.

        ◆ Avoid the use of jargon.

        ◆ Clichés are frequently used phrases. Avoid them.

        ◆ A simile is a comparison using ‘like’ or ‘as’.

        ◆ A metaphor is an implied comparison without the use of
           ‘like’ or ‘as’.

        ◆ Personification gives human characteristics to things that
           are not human.

        ◆ Use similes and metaphors to ‘colour’ your language.

        ◆ Delete unnecessary words.
