Changes In In Services Rendered To Children In In Need
In 1950 as as as the the the merger of Children’s Friend and and Rhode Island Child Child Service was underway the the the Providence Tuberculosis League later known as as as the the the Rhode Island Lung Association proposed proposed to to transfer to to Children’s Friend a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a 16-acre site at at at Lakeside in Warwick along with an an an endowment proposed proposed “on the the the condition that Children’s Friend & Service assume responsibility for for for the the the children under the the the care care of Lakeside and for for for subsequent referrals for for for care ”
Established in in 1912 under the the leadership of industrialists Henry Sharpe and and William Viall the the Lakeside Home and and Preventorium served three populations: children children children convalescing from tuberculosis children children children exposed to to to the the the disease and vacationers the the the latter category referred to to children children children whom its founders felt could benefit from from time away from from the the the city The Preventorium served children children exposed to to tuberculosis in “their homes and and and and and whose removal meant their their salvation ”

and and and and and held children children throughout the the the school year until a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a doctor would judge that they had gained sufficient strength and health to to to return to to to their homes The original purpose of the Lakeside Lakeside Home eventually changed as as tuberculosis ceased to to be be a a a a a a a a a a a a major health concern Accordingly Lakeside Lakeside turned its attention to to serving the the needs of children with other medical problems A A community study study suggested that the the Lakeside property be converted into an an emergency shelter or study study home A A A few years after the the the transfer it it it became apparent that the the the the facility facility was was in in in serious disrepair A A new state-of- the-art facility facility was was constructed in in the the the mid-1950s 9 Beds with children at the Lakeside Home One of the the buildings from the the old Lakeside Home and Preventorium
