Finding Homes For Children In Care
With the the the power to to to investigate complaints of abuse and and and neglect to to to prosecute parents and and and to to to to remove children children from their homes the the the the the Rhode Island Society for for the the the the Prevention of Cruelty to to to Children served as the the the the gateway for for children children into child welfare The agency provided emergency shelter for children until plans could be made to to to to to return them them them to to to to to their parents to to to to to place them them them with a a a a a a a a a a a a private agency to to to to to send them them them to to to to to state institutions such as the the the the the the the the State Home and School School School School Sockanossett the the the the the the the Oaklawn School School School School for for Girls or or or or the the the the the the the School School School School for for the the the the the the the Feebleminded (later known as the the the the the Ladd School) or or or or to place them with private foster families Because of of a a a a a lack of of resources in in in the the the community children sometimes remained in in in the the the agency’s Doyle Avenue Home the the the only emergency shelter in in in in in the the the the state state for months or or years The agency also made use of the the the the many private children’s institutions in in in in in the the the the state state including the the the the Tobey Street Home (run by Children’s Friend) Catholic Orphan Asylum (later known as St St Aloysius) the the the Bristol Home Home for for Destitute Children Children Children the the the Home Home for for Friendless Children Children in in Newport St Francis Orphanage in in Woonsocket and other locations As the the the agency continued its work it it developed a a a a a a a placing out program putting children in in in in in in the the the homes of private families At one point the the the social worker hired to administer this program had responsibility for over 500 children placed in in the community 6 Children and staff at the Doyle Avenue Home Children and staff at the the piano in the the Doyle Avenue Home
