Self-awareness
For you to experience self-acceptance, you must first develop self-awareness. You need to
understand why you think, feel and act the way you do. You need to be aware of the impact of
the formative experiences of your life. You need to understand how and why you have become
the person that you are today.
Only when you achieve a higher level of self-awareness can you move to a higher level of
self-acceptance. You must be more aware of who you really are before you can accept
yourself. And it is only with a high level of self-acceptance that you can enjoy self-esteem, the
key to a happy, healthy personality.
Self Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses,
thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self Awareness allows you to understand other
people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment.
We might quickly assume that we are self aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for
awareness. If you have ever been in a car accident you may have experienced everything
happening in slow motion and noticing details of your thought process and the event.
This is a state if heightened awareness. With practice we can learn to engage these types of
heightened states and see new opportunities for interpretations in our thoughts, emotions, and
conversations.
