Again, this knot creation is not based on any particular dancer in Dunhuang’s wall murals. Rather, it
14 reflects the author’s wish to capture the graceful movement of the dancer, with emphasis on her dress
and her fluttering shawl.
TYING INSTRUCTIONS
1.Tie a round brocade knot with sixteen outer loops, in which every sixth loop is wrapped, and the same with
overlapped loops to form the headdress.
2.Tie a double coin knot for the breasts; a modified pan chang knot with twenty ear loops, every ninth loop
wrapped, to make the dress; a long double coin knot for the upper arm band; and a double coin knot for the
bracelet.
3. Use a different colored cord to make the shawl.
