Initially, I thought this class would be a huge amount of writing of essays and research papers. I honestly was not looking forward to any of that or what went along with it. I had no idea what technical writing was or what I was in for when I signed up for this class, I just knew I had to have the class as a prerequisite to another class in order to graduate. I had put it off as long as I could and finally decided this was the time to take it.
When I looked at the moodle assignments, my first thought was “oh no, a team assignment”. Before this class, I hated team assignments. I have always felt like I got put in with a terrible group and carried the work load or my team didn’t put in the effort to get the grade I wanted. This class turned that thought around and I thoroughly enjoyed my group experience this time around. I couldn’t have asked for a better team. We all worked well together, we all had similar ideas and worked to get our project done ahead of schedule instead of sliding our assignment in the hour before it was due. I think I got lucky with my team members on this assignment and we submitted an excellent proposal.
My favorite assignment of the term was the instructional PowerPoint. I really learned a lot with using PowerPoint and also writing out instructions. I also enjoyed the discussion forums and peer reviews, they allowed us to give feedback to our peers and also see others submissions. Giving feedback to our peers, allowed me to learn how to give feedback without going straight to the negative by adding in a positive comment along with constructive criticism. I also enjoyed the degree audit assignment. This gave me a real look at my overall progress and where my grades are at right now and what my academic situation looks like. It was an eye opening experience for sure.
A few things I found about the class that were unfavorable were the due dates. There were several different due dates per week and that was a lot for me to keep up with. I felt like I caught a break with the hurricane, as terrible as that sounds, because I was able to get ahead and stay a week ahead. Although I was a week ahead, I still missed one of the due dates just because I thought that assignment was due a different day. I also found that once I took the quizzes, I couldn’t see which questions I missed immediately. I like to know what I did wrong and this made it hard to look back or remember to look back at what questions I had gotten wrong.
To conclude, I have learned a lot about different mediums and using different options for future classes. I have learned I don’t have to use Times New Roman font for every document and I am allowed to use Bold for some things. During my initial years of learning, I was taught those were the proper things to do for every document you write and that graphics are never a good idea. I learned to branch out in this class and that people understand the writings you are trying to convey in different ways, so it’s ok to add multiple things to make your document understood. I will use the things I learned in this class for future writings for my work projects. I will use the things I learned in this class for future documents I have to write or prepare in other classes. I really enjoyed this class and the things I learned and feel I learned things that I will be able to use in all areas of my life in the future.
