CRUISE TO THE ROYAL HAMILTON YACHT CLUB
Finally the CSS gets cruising! The much anticipated first cruise of 2019, Saturday, June 29th to Monday, August 1st, was much enjoyed by all. Although missing the traditional July 1st fireworks show, we met over wine and cheese and celebrated at dinner under the tent, explored the waterfront area, swam in the pool and some even ventured to Dundurn Castle. Special thanks to Anastasia Alainas-Hayward, much appreciated in her debut as a Cruise Captain.
2019 TERRY O’CONNELL RALLY TO YOUNGSTOWN
Different from other races and cruises, the two- day Terry O’Connell Rally to Youngstown focuses on sailing, participation and fun, has extremely long start lines, allows for engine hours in handicap scoring and provides experience with navigation, safety, and cross-border requirements. And has a great social program with a champagne dock-side reception and private dinner and awards ceremony as well as fun prizes. This year Youngstown became a reciprocal.
Thirteen RCYC boats participated, with 31 adults and seven children, including a Shark with a 3-year-old on board. It was also the first time crossing the lake for two boats! Four boats from YYC made the trip to RCYC. Hopefully more will visit next year.
Participants could choose from three divisions: Racing (Flying Sail), Cruising (White Sail), and Cruise at Your Own Pace (no start line). Everyone decided to take the start-line after seeing how long and safe the start line was. We had ideal conditions on the way to Youngstown, a light breeze and close-reach on flat water until about six miles off the south shore when the wind dropped. Average time to cross the lake to Youngstown was just over 5 1⁄2 hours and coming back 4 1⁄2 hours in very light conditions. Everyone finished before the 4:30 pm deadline.
The previous Beaver Shield winner, Poch Ma Hon, represented by Hamish Matthew, did an excellent job judging and giving out all of the fun prizes during the evening’s awards dinner.
Winners of the combined rallies to and from YYC were: White Sail 1. Poch Ma Hon, 2. Southern Cross
