HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
With the holiday season just around the corner (yikes!), our festive RCYC social events are calling.
Our calendar is chock a block - here are some highlights:
1. Wine Dinner: Friday, Nov. 8th
Chef matches courses to great wines (car at
home!);
1. Santa Claus Parade: Sunday, Nov. 17th
an RCYC FAMILY-FRIENDLY Club tradition;
1. Family Night Holiday Party: Friday, Nov. 22nd
great kids’ games & parents’ social break (well,
sorta);
1. RCYC Meeting of Members, Monday, Nov. 25th
more below;
1. Family Brunch, Sunday, Dec. 1st , and then Festive
Brunches on both Dec. 15th and 22nd;
1. Holiday Champagne Dinner: Friday, Dec. 13th;
1. Holiday Royal Tea – Saturday, Dec. 21st;
1. New Years’ Eve – London Time: Tuesday, Dec. 31st
– surprise!
And if you’re still feeling the seasonal chill, our RCYC sports calendar is also heating up. For example, try our new Wednesday Night Racquets SOCIAL League – Badminton, Pickleball (huh?!) and Table Tennis, and all for $10.00, including a glass of wine or pint of beer - c’mon, this sounds fun! Our regular Badminton Drop-in is also up and running every Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. Our four inter-club (T&D) squash teams competing city-wide combined with our largest squash house-league ever at 270 Members for our brightest squash year ever. And for all our fitness buffs, we have something cerebral too, as our Fitness Trainer Speaker Series starts with a session on Neuroplasticity on, how fitting, ‘Remembrance’ Day (yes, Nov. 11th).
And while this may be the off-season, sailors never sleep. The Shark Fleet holds its Annual Dinner on Thursday, November 14th. Paul Henderson has acquired the sailing feature documentary film “Maiden” featuring Tracy Edwards & her all-female team in the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race (date TBD). We will also run our “Around the Pool” Remote Control Model-Boat Sailing Race Series on Thursdays.
All this fun aside, your Board and Staff have rolled up the sleeves and started to work on our ‘list’. We have a few clear goals this year (for details, see the website). For example, on Property, we have started a comprehensive Island clean-up - and we will encourage all Members to pitch in next spring as we raise the standards for our beautiful Island, Cherry St. and Parliament St. properties. Our Governance Committee is reviewing peer club best practices to culminate in recommendations to modernize our Governance structure and procedures. Our Finance Committee will work closely with Senior Management to hone cost structure, management processes and financial communications, as we strive for improved efficiency and effectiveness. Finance will also work closely with Membership & Communications to review our Membership categories and fees, with a view to address fairness and sustainability. On Member activities, Sailing, Sports & Social and Heritage have been working closely with senior Staff to finalize our 2020 events calendars – please let us know if you have an interest in helping organize and run events – always welcome. Our Planning Committee is focused on our lease and property game-plans, work which dovetails into our broader board-wide work to update the Club’s Strategic Plan. Finally, in the last several weeks, your Board has been working on next year’s operating budget, for presentation at the November Meeting of Members (MoM), where we would like to see as many of you, our Members, as possible!
Please feel free to reach out at Commodore@rcyc.ca or mrjamiekeating@gmail.com and I will do my best to answer you.
