RCYC RACE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Martha Henderson
Through wind and rain and high water, our new Race Management program is off to a great start! After months of planning and training, there are over 50 Members who are registered in the program for a variety of jobs from Equipment to safety to scoring to registration and on water. Our Members are learning new skills, meeting new people and have a fun new way to engage with the Club.
We have already benefited from the experience of National, Regional and International Race Officers from across the lake who have been so generous with their time and experience to enhance our racing program. Our Thursday Night Race Officer, Anne Sanderson and Tuesday Night Race Officer, Andrew Morgan along with our staff Sean Oderkirk, Steph Lovell, Spencer Leman and Peter Alberti are providing great mid-week racing under tough conditions this spring. Someone you might not have seen is Derek Fisher as he is scoring our weekend events behind the scenes! We had over 25 Members, Staff and external Officials for the Founders Regatta and over 35 for the Brooks Brothers RCYC Open!
You might also have noticed the beautiful Air Swift, captained by Mary Baetz and Robin Wilson, the Henderson Families’ L’Ora and Huckleberry captained by Tom Johannsen as Signal Boats for TGIF, Founder’s Regatta and the RCYC Open respectively. Bruce Moyle and Karen McRae have been tremendously helpful in reviewing our equipment and safety needs. Needless to say, the engagement from our Members has been spectacular.
We are only two months into our sailing season and there is so much more to come. If you are interested in learning how to be involved in any way please reach out to Martha Henderson at martha@risingtides.ca or sign up on the Racing tab at rcyc.ca/sailing. Your level of experience is not important. We hope that this experience will inspire you to get certified, but nothing is required if you just want to come try it out.
