A LOT HAPPENED ON SHORT MATS AND NOW ITS HAPPENING ON THE LONG GREEN
Peter Bennett
The indoor season on the short mats wound up with a double knockout tourney which ran over three weeks. Michael and Linda Carter, with three wins met Renate Hamburgh and Helen Banfil, then at 2 and 1 in the final, and defeated them to take the trophy. The event moved quickly as each game was limited to six ends in order that a winner could be declared by the time we moved over to the Island. Beverley Darville has found an old lawn bowling trophy in her vault so it will now re-enter competition and be presented at the opening luncheon on the Island.
Sailebration was great fun! We had planned on having four well organized “Closest to the jack one bowl only games” the winner to get a Lawn Bowling mug. Reality prevailed and we had a horde of enthusiastic young kids clamoring to play and they kept it up all evening. In the end Helen, Avia, Jesse and William had mugs in their hands. The best that can be said is that no bystanders were bowled over by errant bowls . Yes, we will do it again next year!
As of May 4, we are back on the Island for “Pat Your Bowls”, the Opening Luncheon on the 9th and a Coaching Clinic and the Opening Doubles and Trebles on the 11th. The LBA is moving from our current quarters off the protest room to new digs across the walkway.
Invitations have been sent out for the Nancy Smith OLBA Mixed Trebles Tournament early in August and to date two sponsors have stepped forward to fund the event.
The state of the green and the surrounding ditches have been a concern and the Club is working with Islington Nurseries, who provide the green maintenance service, to carry out repairs to the ditch and do some leveling.
