HERITAGE DINNER: FABULOUS RACING – FLEETS PAST & PRESENT
Diane McElroy, Heritage Committee
The Sports Hall was turned into a showcase of fleets past and present. Our Heritage Dinner organizers, Lori Cane, Sue-Anne Gyles and Jen Volk organized a fascinating array of photos, facts and memorabilia from the RCYC Archives. Guests were captivated by the artful displays in the exhibit. Guests shared memories and learned new facts as they perused the exhibit. The ambiance in the room was invigorating as conversations flowed. The camaraderie at the event was electric.
Sue-Anne led the event planning with a scrupulous eye for detail. Chef Michael Russell excelled once again with a sumptuous meal. Many glowing comments were offered about the friendly and consummate professionalism of the Staff led by Nick Diano, our new Clubhouse Manager. Guests experienced a sense of pride in our ability to put on such an outstanding event steeped in historical detail.
Commodore Chris Mitchele, Master of Ceremonies, led us through the roster of events. Tim Walsh talked about the Club’s past fabulous fleets. His impeccable research and attention to historic detail created compelling stories about our “lost fleets” supported by several humorous anecdotes. Tim said, “I worked on this for three months. I wanted the facts to be as accurate as possible. Quite a challenge.” Commodore Jamie Keating then took over to talk about our current racing fleets. With the help of information from the Fleet Captains and others, he catapulted the audience into another dimension. He was entertaining and engaging as he drew us in with his wit and interesting facts.
One of the goals of the Heritage Dinner is to raise funds so that we can continue to preserve our vast array of trophies, art and model collections and other valuable archival artefacts. Thanks to all who came as well as those Members who could not attend but sent donations to the Heritage Trust Fund.
