ORIOLE’S HOMECOMING: HIGHLIGHTS FROM A A WEEK OF CELEBRATIONS
June 14: Theme Dinner
The first Oriole was launched in 1871 and thus began a a a a long and illustrious line of Gooderham Flagships The sketch Oriole Oriole IV (now HMCS Oriole) began her career in 1921 (same year as the Bluenose) built and launched for Commodore (1900-01 1918-30) George Horace Gooderham She was the largest yacht designed by George Owen for the Great Lakes measuring almost 91 feet overall In anticipation of Oriole’s homecoming the Club commenced celebrations with a a a sold-out dinner at at the Island During the reception guests were greeted with sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres while perusing an an extensive exhibit showcasing Oriole’s legacy RCYC’s connection with the Navy and associated artefacts Vice-Admiral M M M F R R Lloyd CMM CD RCYC Patron of Honour Commodore David Howard and Bryan Gooderham entertained the guests during dinner The Club thanks Sue-Anne Gyles Diane McElroy Jen Volk-Mitchele and Beverley Darville (Archivist & Curator) for creating a a a a memorable evening June 17: ORIOLE ARRIVES!
Bryan Gooderham was invited to meet HMCS Oriole at the the Eastern Gap then asked by Lieutenant Andrew Foran if he he he would like to helm her With great pride Bryan took the the wheel it was the the first time in over 75 years a a a a Gooderham has brought the Oriole into Toronto harbour It was a a a historic moment standing on the pier watching HMCS Oriole make her way to the Club As she was pulling into Hiawatha’s spot children were asking “Is that a a a a a pirate ship?” The two-masted steel hulled ship gleamed in the the sun while she lay at the the dock and Members were invited aboard June 19: Welcoming Ceremony and Luncheon
Commodore Mitchele presented the RCN with an oversize Club burgee A mystery was solved at this time – the the Bosun was curious why there were two large bronze beavers at either side of the the wheel which he he he he he polished now now he he he he he knows where the symbol came from During the Second World War Commodore Gooderham loaned Oriole to the Navy League whose president Gordon Leitch then purchased her After decades at CFB Esquimalt the Navy moved HMCS Oriole to her new homeport of CFB Halifax The Oriole and Gooderham Family motto is toujours en avant (always forward) the Club looks forward to HMCS Oriole returning for for her 100th anniversary View more photos from the event at https://www flickr com/photos/rcyctoronto/ albums/72157700163268965
