 HERITAGE DINNER RECAP
Diane McElroy, Heritage Committee
The 2018 Heritage Dinner celebrating 100 years of sailing excellence was a beguiling journey into the past. The Model Room and Bistro 1852 were transformed into a historical storybook of the most interesting and poignant sailing events. Over 200 guests were mesmerized by the dazzling display of artifacts, trophies, articles, photos and other memorabilia. The Club Archivist & Curator, Beverley Darville,
worked tirelessly to put together the exhibit that displayed many of the prominent sailing milestones of generations past.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, was the Guest of Honour, arriving with her Aide de Camp, several protection officers and Senior Advisor. Brian Anthony, Chair of the Heritage Committee along with Commodore Chris Mitchele and Jennifer Volk greeted the Lieutenant Governor as she arrived at the Clubhouse. They then escorted her through the exhibit. The RCYC pulled out all stops by turning the Sports Hall into a beautiful dinner venue. In keeping with protocol, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps. piped in the Head Table led by the Lieutenant Governor.
Paul Henderson was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He was dynamic, funny and engaging which is no mean feat in front of so many guests. Paul shared interesting and entertaining sailing stories. Special guest Commodore David E. Howard was honoured throughout the evening as the guests celebrated his 100th birthday and 90 years of sailing history at RCYC.
