JULY 2020
Virtual Racing in a Pandemic Jenny Farrand, Sailing Manager
The move to sailing “online” vs “on the water” has been a major success and continues even though we’re emerging from our homes. In a time of quarantine, our Virtual RCYC Midweek Racing provided a much-needed relief from social isolation with Zoom video calls every Tuesday and Thursday night between many sailors. Some very familiar faces for our typical midweek racing, along with a
great turnout in sailors that are either new to the Club or emerging as active racers in our fleets.
We have to extend a huge THANK YOU to our dedicated Race Captains that led these fleets every week as we are

limited to a maximum of twenty competitors per race – meaning that we had three or four fleets participating on a weeknight. Thanks to Marco Koechli, our consistent race leader, as well as Shaurya Gupta, Doug Bullock and Darryn Crombeen for acting as our ROs in a time of need!
Results do not include the June series as sailors are still currently on the third week of racing. Congratulations to our inaugural race winners!

Dry Sail Fleet Registry Jenny Farrand, Sailing Manager
Your Sailing Office and other RCYC Staff are cleaning
up the Island and City Station throughout the summer to improve our Facilities and update our Club Fleet Registry. Beyond Staff there has also been a group of Members assisting in this large project. We are extremely grateful for their support and look for future joint work parties to assist in this Club revitalization. In the first wave of clean up, we started with organizing City Station Dry Sail area by identifying boats/trailers to allocate space and bill all items appropriately. We continue to monitor the large number of boats located at Cherry Street as well as
the North Island Dinghy Docks, South Island Dry Sail and throughout the Island grounds to restore a sense of pride in our beloved Club and all that it has to offer. This is not limited to sailboats and tenders, as many Members enjoy the use of kayaks, canoes and paddleboards to explore the lagoons.
This will be an active clean up initiative as we work to build a comprehensive list of all boats on RCYC property. We’re asking RCYC Members to help out in this endeavour by contacting the Dockmaster at dockmaster@rcyc.ca with any relevant details on boats and equipment stored at the Club. Thank you to everyone for your patience and assistance as we work towards many more great sailing seasons to come!
