JULY 2020
Junior Club - A Great
Summer Ahead
Jenny Farrand, Sailing Manager
SAILING • 14
We’re excited to invite young sailors to join our summer sailing programs once again and make some great memories to wrap into the unique summer of 2020. RCYC’s Junior Club was first established in 1925 and has seen many years of change since its inception – this season is unlike no other and we are certain that these past months of analysing and rebuilding have helped to grow our programs in a positive step forward. As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants and that
has never been clearer. With extensive training, our Sailing Staff are eager to produce new memories for all our Junior Club families, new and returning, with some adjustments to everyday life.
Junior Club is well-equipped for the new COVID-19-19 policies in place, particularly with our robust fleet of single- handed dinghies suitable to beginners all the way up to advanced sailors. We also have many double-handed boats that will be made available to families and social circles to provide opportunities for all ages to engage
in activities together. The team in the Sailing Office has been in constant contact with Ontario Sailing to develop appropriate guidelines/protocols in relation to COVID-19-19 and the return to sailing. Some of our experienced youth racers were able to begin spring training at the end of
May due to our strict adherence to regulations and we are steadily adapting to new phases and policies announced by the Government of Ontario as well as the City of Toronto.
Our July sessions are sold out with capacity determined by these policies concerning day camps from the provincial government as well as our regular considerations regarding safety on the water. Families can join the waitlist for July and we still have space remaining in August but not for long so make sure you reserve a spot for your sailor at home!
The Junior Club Committee is looking forward to “squaring the pyramid” and encouraging sailors of all interests to develop a lifelong passion for the sport. We look towards the future of Junior Club students and the available opportunities a lifetime membership at RCYC can bring: one-design racing, overnight cruising, offshore or dinghy sailing – the list goes on! There is plenty to offer at our Club
for every generation of sailors and Junior Club is where it all begins.
