“We really liked it. Principals talked about it with their council and parents and the parents were very supportive.”
However Sherman says the content won’t be from 300 years ago in England, it will be indigenous topics.
“It’s not just a good thing to do, it’s the right thing to do as a school board,” says Mark Sherman with the Lambton Kent District School Board.
Sherman says the parents were happy their children didn’t have to learn about Shakespeare again and could learn something with Canadian cultural signi cance.
Residential schools will be discussed in the course.
The superintendent of secondary schools is excited about giving indigenous writings a more prominent place in the Grade 11 English course.
The works of Shakespeare will continue to be taught in Grade 10.
Sherman says a lot of students see things in the media and want to know more and this
is a good way to generate meaningful discussion.
The course, which used to focus on Shakespeare, will study indigenous books.
Ten of 12 high schools in Lambton-Kent already teach the new curriculum. The nal two will begin teaching the course in September.
In the past year, Sherman says many other boards in the province have become interested in Lambton-Kent’s curriculum.
The idea is not new.
“We took it, developed it, spruced it up, provided training, received funding, bought fresh resources, and provided teacher training.”
