Roadside garbage and recycling approved for all Dawn-Euphemia

Veillieux says it is possible, but it would only make the system more expensive for everyone else, since he’d still face the same costs to provide the service. “You’ll be caught with a user fee or subsidizing with the taxes,” he says.

People in Dawn-Euphemia will soon be wheeling their garbage and recyclables to the end of the driveway.
That angered a few residents at the meet- ing who wanted to continue to bring their waste to the Dawn Land ll until it is lled. A report to council showed that will be in the next ve to 17 years depending on the amount of garbage diverted there.
Township council approved a plan to use ‘wheelie bins’ across both the former Dawn and Euphemia townships despite concerns from some residents about the change.
Dawn residents take their trash to the dump and recycling to a depot. The mu- nicipality’s waste provider – Bluewater Recycling Association – is phasing out the old style of garbage trucks and using a new automated system with large bins on wheels.
“What are you going to do with your gar- bage in 17 years?” asked Councillor Jason Myers. “Bluewater is a good organization offering a service at a very reasonable rate.”
Residents will be able to get a small garbage bin for just over $100 and everyone gets a free recycling bin.
One person suggested council bring the issue to residents for a vote. Council dis- missed that idea.
Homeowners can buy larger garbage bins if they wish.
“I’m not going to spend thousands of dol- lars for a $2 week charge,” says Mayor Al Broad.
The waste and recycling will be picked up every two weeks.
Council authorized township staff to work with Bluewater Recycling to get the pro- gram up and running.
Some Dawn Township residents were opposed to the move so Monday night, councillors asked the head of BRA, Frank Veillieux, if some residents could opt out.
Residents will likely begin using the road- side service this year.
Petrolia compost meeting set for May 26

MOECC would want the site fenced off if it were to continue operating although, the MOECC says right now, that is not a concern.
The Independent
Staff from the Ministry of the Environ- ment and the Town of Petrolia are set to meet May 26 to try to nd “a path forward” on the town’s compost site.
MOECC Spokesman Gary Wheeler says the ministry wants to work with the town, whatever it decides.
The town shut down its Maude Street Ex- tension site after a Ministry of the Environ- ment and Climate Change inspection March 22 pointed out 14 areas of concern that the municipality needed to address.
“For example, if the municipality decides to continue operating the site, discussions on issues such as improvements to site drainage and repair of the site berms will be necessary,” he says in an email.
They included providing a plan to deal with surface water and leachate at the site, keeping a log book that records the source, type and amount of materials received, where the materials from the site are being shipped, including any waste, and making sure “the burning of waste does not occur at the compost site and the proper disposal of any waste follows the conditions of the town’s Environmental Compliance Ap- proval.”
“If the municipality wishes to permanently close the site, a discussion regarding site closure responsibilities (such as the removal of residual waste) will need to occur.”
Town of cials had been concerned the
The municipality has some time to decide its next steps since it has contracted Waste Management to run seven compost days at the company’s Progress Drive site. That will cost about $18,000.
