stamina and determination. *In 1960 Ron Carroll (the

manager of the Sarnia Legion- naires hockey club) ran much of the 16k in his bare feet. He n- ished 5th with a time of 60.17.
Mykayla Verberne is hoping 600 people will run the 60th edition of the Watford to Alvin- ston Road Race and the goal seems within reach.
Here are a few other interest- ing items the group found:
* The Watford Alvinston Road Race has never been cancelled. Although rain, sleet and snow have been a part of the activity, the race still was held.
Registration for one of Ontario’s best known events is already over 420.
* In 1997, Bill Dolbear contacted and invited 6 of the original runners (from the very rst race) to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Watford Alvinston Road Race. Hykle Van der Wal, Bruce Faulds and Ray Acton all ran and complet- ed the 16km course.
Verberne says year after year, families take part in the 16K and 8K races on Victoria Day, continuing the tradition of a group of guys who one day decided to run from Alvinston to Watford.
In 2005, a blinding snow storm caused many runners to shiver. However, there were very few complaints
“Parents ran it and now they’re doing it with their families.”
* The rst prizes for partici- pants in the Watford Alvinston Road Race were; a can of paint, shing tackle, bbq sets and crests.
The 16K race begins at 8:30 am on Walnut Street in Alvin- ston while the gun will sound for the 8K race 30 minutes later on Churchill Line.
This year’s event will give
a nod to the race’s beginnings with families of two of the ori- ginal racers, the Caleys and the Dolbears, starting each race.
* In 1988 Tim Moore and Tom Clifford of London and Gary Betts and Brad Lessard of Komoka biked to Watford for the race. Tim nished 12th overall. Following the race the foursome biked back to their homes. What a great show of
Families can keep their children entertained until the racers come in at a new Kidfest near the nish line, the Watford arena. While the online regis- tration for the race is already closed, Verberne says you can sign up in person on race day for $40 in cash.
