A bowline combined with a fisherman’s bend gives extra security and
lessens jamming during long underwater use. Instead of ending the knot
with the second half hitch, take the end of the line and turn it around the
standing part from front to back, forming a loop with an overhand knot at
the bottom (1). Give the free end a sharp downward pull, causing the
overhand knot to roll over and form a small loop in the standing part (2).
Pass the free end behind the standing part and up through the loop (3),
as in a regular bowline. Draw up carefully so pressure is equal on both
parts and the knot is secure (4).
