’ve been riding for a long time. I bought my first bike at 18 years-old from my brother. It was a Honda 750/4. I got into Harleys in the late 80’s when I realized you did not have to fix them every day. What made me want one so badly was all the custom bikes I saw when I was a kid growing up - from choppers to bobbers (they weren’t called that then).

I follow a lot of vintage bike pages on social media and the old pictures are just great. So many different styles and paint jobs all in the same pictures. It looked like they all dressed how they wanted when they ride or hung out. There was no sea of black bike week t shirts in the pictures. No new Harley boots or jeans. Nobody was fol- lowing a trend or a particular style then. I just wonder 40 years from now, will people see pictures from the 2010’s and think that all the guys over 50-years-old had 30” front wheels and listened to rap music stupid-loud? It’s not just the old guys. The people riding that are in their 20’s and early 30’s actually seem to be going for that vin- tage look (I love that era), but with no imagination. Almost everyone is wearing the exact same outfit, from pants, vest and plaid. I would have thought with all the technology and talent, the bikes would be different as well, and not almost all the same.

So far, it seems like the guys in their 40’s (I’m way older, so I’m not claiming I’m ahead of anyone) are carrying the torch for imagination and designs. Yes, there are indi- viduals in every age group that excel in talent and design, so I know that “my” opinion of this is a broad statement. I just ruined a complete paint job on my wife’s bike because I wanted to try something new and it failed mis- erably. I wanted to make people say, “wow!” Well, now there’s a Plan B to make people say, “wow.” I just love trying out-of-the-box or even normal stuff. It’s a rush when you succeed!
So, don’t settle to be in a “homogenized” bike world, don’t be trapped by your age and feel like you have to stay in a certain style- try new stuff, reach for better or different. I want you to imagine the feeling you’ll get when you get that compliment on the job you did. That feeling will make you push and try more and more stuff. Being complacent and not using your mind to create or at least try is dangerous. H
