(ALSO KNOWN AS THUMB KNOT)

he overhand knot is both the simplest of all knots and the basis of most other knots. In
T its own right, an overhand knot can be used as a simple stopper knot in
the end of line. Sailors, in fact, rarely use this knot because it is a difficult
one to untie when the rope is wet. Likewise, an overhand knot in small
stuff like string can be difficult to undo.

                             Make a crossing turn
I by taking the working end
of the small stuff behind the
                          standing part.

                                                            Tuck the working end
2 through the loop that has
                                                         already been formed.

             Pull on the working end
3 and on the standing part to
          tighten the knot.
