Navigation Notes

        Line 1 on the map.

There’s no easy way to escape the great urban sprawl that is London. One option is to simply
make your way to the London Orbital, the M25, the great ring road that encircles the city, and head
south to Intersection 7 with the M23.

GPS 51.2601, -0.1127 at the M23/M25 interchange if you are coming from the east and north.

GPS 51.2651, -0.1402 at the M23/M25 interchange if you are coming from the west.

Take the exit on to the M23 following signs “M23 (S) / Brighton / Gatwick” .

Follow similar signs on to the M23 then pick up the road notes four paragraphs below
marked “Expert navigator tip: The M25 joins here”.

Otherwise, if you are coming from somewhere near central London, find the A23 which begins life
as Brixton Road and let it lead you to the the M23.

As you are travelling south you will see a blue and white sign on the left that says “Gatwick /
Brighton / M23”. On the road surface the left lane is marked “M23”. Get in that lane and take the
        exit to the M23.

Next you will see a blue and white sign on an overhead gantry that says “M23 / Gatwick / Crawley
/ Brighton”. Follow that sign to remain on the M23. Watch for signs that indicate that you should
be in the right hand lane to remain on the M23.

Expert navigator tip: The M25 joins here.

Keep following signs that say “Crawley / Brighton M23” Stay on the M23 until you reach the
outskirts of Crawley. Without any seeming other change the motorway now becomes the A23.

30.8 mi 50.8676, -0.1555 Eventually you will come to a large roundabout on the A23. Take the
second exit to remain on the A23 s/p “Brighton A23”.

Expert navigator checkpoint: Shortly after that roundabout you will have a park on your right
hand side and shortly after pass the Black Lion pub on the l.

From there on follow the line of least resistance – that is, don’t make any radical turns, just keep
        on following the road ahead.

You will remain on the A23 right into Brighton following s/posts to “Town Centre” until you reach
the centre of Brighton. As you near the waterfront you will be on Grand Parade (A23) and the
Brighton Pavilion will be over to your right.

There’s parking in the area near The Lanes – expensive, but convenient. (You’ll need coins for the
meter). From there you can explore The Lanes shopping precinct and visit the Pavilion.

4.1 mi 50.1529,-0.1366 The waterfront at BRIGHTON.
