One day Dad returned home. He either had been to Louisville with a load of tobacco or just to Glasgow.
Mother informed him that Bob and Paul had been smoking. Instead of getting a belt to deal with them he
pulled 2 cigars out of his pocket cut them into pieces each and proceeded to give all four of us boys a half
which he lit and told us to smoke. Then very shortly three boys were throwing up. However, I continued to
enjoy my cigar for which I got the belt.
Another time Dad returned from town with a present for his 4 young sons‐a pocketknife (small.) Well at first
me and Earl could not open ours. After some doing, I learned to open it with my teeth, which I very soon got it
stuck on my tongue. Mom confiscated four knives – which we never saw again.
Back in the Big City again, I have one quick small remembrance of a place we lived in, on Loth Street. Loth
Street runs from the lower end of Inwood Park south for about 3 or 4 blocks to Mulberry Street. Loth Street
runs parallel to Vine Street and is one block east of Vine. I think we only lived here for about one month.
My next memory is living at 2120 Vine Street, which is on or one and a half blocks north of where Mulberry
intersects with Vine –Thinking about it now, this house must have been behind the one on Loth Street.
I started Kindergarten while living here. I attended Vine Street School, which was just down the street about a
half block.
My only memory of this school was telling the teacher
I didn’t want any milk, especially warm milk. It was a
custom at this time that milk was furnished to all
kindergarten students. It was delivered about 8:00
a.m. and sat unrefrigerated until given to students
between 9 and 10 a.m. However, the teacher was
determined that I should drink my milk, which I
instantly threw up all over the place.

I finished kindergarten at 23 district school, later
named Louis M. Shield School. Between Daniel and
University Streets on Vine Street. I also finished the
next eight years here with my three brothers.
While attending Shield School for approximately the
first 6 years, we lived at 17 west Corry Street which
was at the north end of Glendora Street which ran
north from our house 3 blocks past the back side of
Shield School and ended about 2 blocks north of the
school at the old car barn (transit).
Most of this time Dad worked for the Zoological Garden (Cincinnati Zoo) His main job was running the roller
coaster where he gave many a kid a free ride, so they could save their nickel for a coke or ice cream.
Grandma and her two daughters Lou and Grace lived next door to us at 19 West Corry Street. After
