If you are interested in the future of organ transplantation
you might like to watch the Panorama program aired on 6th
June 2016 entitled ‘Medicine’s big breakthrough. Editing
your genes.’ In this fascinating programme scientists in USA
outline their work using research pioneered in CRISPIR (a
biological system for altering DNA known as gene editing)
to create a human gene-matched whole organ pancreas for
transplantation. The recipient of the gene-matched pancreas
would – in theory at this stage – not require immune
suppressing medication post transplant.
This program is still available to watch on BBC iPlayer until April 2017. (Panorama, Season 21, Episode
17, first air date: 6th June 2016)
