The intent of this Anatomy and Physiology Primer
The full text of the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) textbook is over 1300 pages and available free at: https://cnx.org/content/col11496/1.7
Its contains enough anatomy and physiology information to support two college semester classes on the subject. It is unrealistic to expect the average EMS course to include all the learning this textbook offers, nor is it useful to just summarize its content. This primer supports self-paced learning.
Therefore, this Primer follows the Chapter of the OpenStax e-pub textbook where each Section and sub-Section highlights content that narrows the focus of the topic. While the reading the Primer, the reader is encouraged to seek more detailed information on the subject by accessing the full content of the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology textbook. The reader is should watch embedded videos to obtain deeper understanding on the subject. Internet hyperlinks are included. Additional internet searches on topics may be useful.
A fair analogy to learning the complex subject of anatomy and physiology is:
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Each chapter builds on one another. Information conveyed early in the OpenStax textbook and Primer will be reviewed later in relationship to topics in upcoming chapters. Each Section defines the full OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology text-
book Chapter objectives. Each sub-Section objectives focuses on only three or less points of the full content. Study Questions provided at the beginning of the Section helps the reader prepare for the content of that chapter. Learning A&P is a process.
Blended Learning Methodology There are many types of teaching systems. This primer supports Blending Learning which means the student studies the con- tent to a depth where the educator need not lecture to any detail on the subject, but includes a review of the A&P content into the EMS educational lesson being taught.
Primer Use by the Instructor
EMS educators should promote use of the free full version of the Open Stax text- books, published by Rice University: https://cnx.org/content/col11496/1.7
EMS educators may assign specific Sections and/or Units in teaching Anatomy and Physiology. As a matter of learning, students have found self-paced learning a valu- able methodology when it comes to learning detailed and complex content. Apply elements of anatomy and physiology and its relationship to EMS topics. The stu- dent will understand how body system relate to one another and how key it is to patient assessment and EMS patient treatment. OpenStax Anatomy and Physiol- ogy .pdf can be used as a visual presentation, although educators are discouraged from teaching this content as a full anatomy and physiology course.
Therefore, educators should teach to the level of learning ability and EMS certifica- tion level of their students by supporting blending learning with home study time, video watching and self-paced learning. Do not expect the student to understand the full depth of the anatomy and physiology immediately, yet key upon its impor- tance with respective EMS lessons being taught.
