Avonmouth v Hanham Athletic
20 January 2024
Avonmouth’s previous two games against Hanham Athletic this season have produced very close
results with winning goals in the final few minutes with each team winning once. The first chance
of the game came after 6 minutes for Avonmouth who shot wide from a rebound.
Just 4 minutes later Avonmouth’s Charlie Aldom played a cross field pass to Matt Groves and his
great cross to Josh Pearce whose header was just wide.
Avonmouth were pressing hard and Josh Pearce was played through on goal that resulted in a
good save by Hanham keeper Sam Brown who pushed it out for a corner. From Matt Groves’
corner Charlie Aldom headed towards goal that was flicked on by Jack Willaims over the keeper
to make the score 1-0 to Avonmouth.
Although Avonmouth were now dominating the game,
after 16 minutes Hanham broke away and saw Karim
Randall bear down on gaol but a great challenge by Kofi
Martin came to the rescue for Avonmouth. Just 2
minutes later Josh Pearce beat 2 defenders on the left
side and pulled the ball back and his shot was just wide
of the left-hand post.
However, Hanham came back into the game and
following a free kick from the left hand side that resulted
in a header that required Tom Bradley to push the ball
over the bar. Halfway through the first half, an
Avonmouth free kick found Charlie Adom and his on-
target shot was pushed away by keeper Brown but Alfe
Taylor fired home to double Avonmouth’s lead.
Avonmouth were in control until just before half time
when Hanham started to push forward resulting in a
cross that Randall just failed to convert. The first half
finished with Avonmouth well on top but with Hanham
always looking dangerous on the break.
Josh Pearce does brilliantly to latch onto a pass from the
Hanham keeper, he found Alfie Taylor who to picked out
Kyle O'Donovan at the back post and he squeezed the
ball into the net to make the score 3-0. Hanham reduced
the arrears when Randell scored and just seconds later
Hanham scored again through sub Andy Nash to make
it 3-2. With Hanham’s tails up and straight after
Avonmouth had yet another shot cleared off the line
they conceded an unfortunate own goal to make the
scores level.
Finally, Matt Groves under pressure swivels and from
outside the box on the left hand side curled an
unstoppable shot into the top right corner, securing all 3 Man of the Match v Almondsbury
points for Avonmouth. Alfie Taylor
