Toolsta on Western League Review
It was a good day for the newcomers to the Toolstation Western League on
Saturday with several of the new clubs recording first-day victories.
Pride of place goes to Helston Athletic who celebrated their promotion to the
Premier Division from the South West Peninsula League by trouncing Bridport 7-1
on their own St. Mary’s Ground with a hat trick coming from Matthew Buchan, two
from Kai Cornish and one each by Phil Cattran and Stuart Bowker. Riley Weedon
notched a consolation goal for the home side.
Saltash United followed a similar path to Helston during the summer re-allocation
of clubs by the Football Association, and they began with a 2-0 win over much-
fancied Tavistock with goals from Callum O’Brien and Scott Crocker.
Mousehole fought out an exciting 3-3 draw with Wellington but Ilfracombe
Town were edged out 3-2 at Bitton. Sean Keet, Adam Carter and Ben Withey
netted for the home side who just held off two goals from Chris Roberts for ‘Combe.
There was also a narrow setback for the newly-named Bridgwater United who
fell 4-3 at home to Buckland Athletic whilst Ashton & Backwell United freshly
promoted from Division One, went down 3-0 at Keynsham Town
Cadbury Heath could hardly have made a worse start to their campaign, losing
6-0 at home to a lively Shepton Mallet side. Jack Fillingham led the way with two
early goals and then set up Aaron Seviour for the third goal after 40 minutes. A
bizarre own goal on half time sent Heath in for a miserable interval. Joe Morgan
followed up Fillingham’s second penalty kick which was initially saved to net
number five and David Regula completed the scoring.
Brislington scored a fine 3-1 victory at Street thanks to two goals from George
Jonas and one from Simon Prangley. In the other game played in the top flight, two
goals from Ben Sterr were not enough to give Exmouth Town all three points at
home to Clevedon Town as the Seasiders left Devon with a 2-2 draw.
Tytherington Rocks marked their switch from the Hellenic League with a surprise
2-1 win at one of the First Division title favourites Cheddar. Bailey Croome
notched both of the Rocks’ goals with the Cheesemen’s reply coming from Callum
Laird.
Newly-promoted AEK Boco began life in the Western League with a hard-fought
goal less draw at local rivals Oldland Abbotonians.
Jude McCarthy’s strike was the only bright spot on a bad day at the office for
Hengrove Athletic who crashed 6-1 at Sherborne Town. Almondsbury also
began with a defeat but buy the only goal of the game at Warminster Town.
Corey Gardner grabbing the headlines.
Longwell Green Sports were 3-2 winners at Wincanton Town whilst Lebeq
United lost 2-1 at home to Radstock Town despite a goal from Niekell Plummer.
Portishead Town returned from new boys Gillingham Town with a 3-0 victory
and Welton Rovers also won 2-1 on the road at Odd Down (Bath) thanks to
Jake Slocombe and Chris Pile.
The remaining two matches both resulted in 2-2 draws. Bishop Sutton had
Solomon Shearer on target twice but had to settle for a point as Wells City hit
back through Craig Herrod and Adam Wright. Bishops Lydeard also shared four
goals with Devizes Town for whom Jordan Kirk and Rhys Talmash were on target.
