Highlights of Punta Arenas

        November 19, 2017 10:45am

        Duration: 3.00 Hrs.

This fascinating tour will take you on a scenic drive to Plaza de Armas,
the main square with its statue of Magellan; Cerro la Cruz, a viewpoint
overlooking the city; the Straits of Magellan; the port; and legendary
Tierra del Fuego Island. Visit the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum,
founded by the Salesian missionaries and offering gives a
comprehensive overview of the regional flora and fauna, the habitat of
the indigenous people of the region, and regional history. The next stop
is the Museo del Recuerdo, Museum of Memories, located on the
grounds of the Patagonian Institute, the research center of the
University of Magallanes. This open-air museum consists of antique
trains, machinery and relics of the European settlers in this remote part
of the world. As you head back towards town, you'll pass a pioneer
cemetery with avenues lined by tall cypress trees and splendid
mausoleums. A solemn tombstone indicates the place where the last of
the now-extinct Ona Indians are buried.

        Magdalena Island & Penguin Reserve

        November 19, 2017 10:15am

        Duration: 4.50 Hrs.

After departing from the pier, you will drive up the spectacularly
beautiful coast along the Strait of Magellan, a passageway named for
Ferdinand Magellan, who navigated the strait in 1520 while
circumnavigating the world. In time, you will board a covered speedboat
and head to Magdalena Island, a barren, rock-strewn nature preserve
home to one of the largest colonies of Magellanic penguins in Chile.
