When he returned to Peru in 1912, the
        Peruvian government granted him an
authorization to carry out his projects,
        including allowing the parts obtained
during his explorations to be taken freely
from the country, provided they are
        promptly returned when requested by
        Peru.

Yale University finally returned the artifacts between 2011 and 2012,
100 years after Bingham had re-discovered the city and taken the
        artifacts.

Only about 30% of the city is of
                                            original construction, the rest
                                            has been rebuilt. The
                                            reconstructed areas are easily
                                            recognized by the fit between
                                            the stones. The original
                                            construction is formed by larger
                                            stones, and with grooves with
                                            little space between the rocks.

On July 7, 2007, Machu Picchu
was elected one of the seven
                                            new wonders of the world.
