TAKING THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS VEHICLES TO NEW
HEIGHTS (LITERALLY)
AT ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORCARS PALM BEACH
2018 Phantom VIII and all-new Cullinan “high-sided car” add new luster to the legendary line.
By Peter Frey -The Test Drive Guy
Every product in the world – from paper clips to executive jets – has a ‘best’, a brand or model that is widely acknowledged to embody the absolute ultimate in style, taste and craftsmanship. In the automotive world, that pin- nacle is occupied by Rolls-Royce.
And even among the elite few
models that make up the Rolls-
Royce line (including the Dawn Convertible, Ghost Sedan and Wraith Coupe) there is a ‘best’ – a title current- ly held by the Phantom VIII Sedan and Drophead Coupe.
But there’s a new challenger coming,
the all-new Cullinan “high-sided car” (to would be a travesty to call it an SUV), and you’ll see it this Spring at Rolls-Royce Motorcars Palm Beach – the rst North American Rolls-Royce dealership in history to win Rolls-Royce’s National and Global ‘Dealer of the Year’ awards simul- taneously.
The Phantom VIII is designed to push the boundaries of bespoke luxury and per- sonalization. Built on an all-new alumi- num space frame architecture called ‘The Architecture of Luxury’ that will form the basis of every future Rolls-Royce, it makes the car stronger, lighter, quieter and enables the uid new styling, including
50the owing, tapered tail reminiscent of
the legendary Phantoms of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
All of which rides on air suspension and a state-of-the-art chassis control system to produce what Rolls-Royce calls the ‘Magic Carpet Ride.’ And under the hood is a smooth and powerful twin-turbocharged V-12 engine producing 563 horsepower. Phantom VIII enhancements include the highest level of driver-assistance tech- nology ever in a Rolls-Royce, including a 4-camera system with Panoramic View, Night Vision and Vision Assist, Active Cruise Control and the latest navigation and entertainment systems. High-tech amenities also include the delightful ‘Starlight Headliner’ and the company’s remarkable new ‘Gallery’ behind-glass dashboard that projects artwork of your choosing on the inside surface.
“This Phantom is a pleasure for all your senses, says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief
Executive O cer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. And the same, natu- rally, will be true of the remark- able new Rolls-Royce Cullinan, named after the largest diamond ever found. The company calls
it a ‘high-sided car,’ what would be called an SUV here in Palm Beach.
While sharing the all the luxury, craftsmanship and technology of the Phantom VIII, as well as the aluminum architecture, the Culli-
nan is the company’s rst-ever all-wheel drive model, with, eventually, a choice
of wheelbases and lengths from 18-ft. to a limousine-length 19.6-ft. The Cullinan will also share the Phantom’s smooth-rid- ing air suspension and powerful V-12 turbocharged engine.
And while all this doesn’t make it into a hard-core o -roader, Rolls-Royce chair- man Peter Schwarzenbauer did charac- terize it as a vehicle that can “... that can cross any terrain.”
