Powerboats and cars are a very sexy combination. It was that formula (with a bit of fashion on the side) that made 80’s TV series
Miami Vice the hit that it was. So much so that it propelled Michael Mann to the top of the directing tree and changed the way TV shows were made and viewed. So great were these shots of Sonny Crocket, wind in hair, as he stood at the helm of a 40ft Cigarette Boat skimming the waves that I’ve loved boats ever since, especially fast ones. I used to have a ski boat and dabbled with off shore powerboats through some friends in Poole. We came very close to owning an 85ft motor yacht, but common sense prevailed, so it’s fair to say I like boats. Day boats are another ball game; usually in the 30-40 feet range, 4-8 seats and fast, so you have all the fun of getting out around the coast and finding those hidden beaches, or mooring up at an island restaurant, without the horrendous cost of ownership of a motor yacht.
At the Geneva motor show this year I noticed quite a few of the motoring marques had linked up with marine companies to apply their brand to boats. There were a number of detailed Model boats on display, but the one that really stood out was on the Aston Martin stand. So, when I got a call from Mariella Mengozzi the CEO of Quintessence Yachts asking if we’d like to come to the Cote D’Azure and try out the boat it was only a matter of diary co-ordination. Quintessence Yachts had been given the task of realising the Aston Martin dream to take the very DNA of the sports car company and create a luxury powerboat. Quintessence were the perfect partner for this, their reputation for research and innovation was key to developing a boat with style, comfort and speed worthy of the Aston Martin badge.
