As we landed in Nice Airport and collected our rental car it was a hot August day, slight cloud made it bearable as we stopped for breakfast in Antibes. The AM37 was birthed in Golfe Juan Marina which nestles in a natural bay just past Cap d’Antibes on the French Riviera before you reach Cannes. A perfect setting for a boat like this, after an alfresco breakfast of fresh croissants we continued on the Board Du Mare, past Eden Rock until we turned into Golfe Juan marina. We had arranged to meet captain Rob, himself a qualified naval architect, at the fuelling dock. Jenny asked how we find the boat as we walked past the jetties full of boats in the marina, easy I said, that’s it pointing to a sleek blue craft lying alongside the concrete quayside. There was no mistaking this was our boat, it just looked fast, as we got closer the subtle emblems of the Aston Martin badges were apparent on her flanks and the sun bought the metallic blue paint to life.
She had her canopy up shading the cockpit from the hot sun which gave her an aggressive profile, as if ready to pounce from the water. Rob and his first mate greeted us and welcomed us aboard. Even as we stepped onboard the craftsmanship was evident, a mix of Carbon Fibre, marine plywood and leather formed almost organically into an elegant craft that gave away the years of research and design. You can almost see the sketches of the Quintessence team of architects and engineers and how Mulder Design had wrapped this around the Aston Martin palette. This baby looked every bit as good as those original design sketches must have. Rob explained the weight distribution and the composite hull, strong, stiff and light using the same carbon technology deployed in offshore racing boats and aircraft. The twin hull- step design reduces the surface contact or “wetted area” and therefore lowers the drag by 10%, which in turn increases your top speed. Her curved glass windscreen is one of the first things you notice, an innovation in marine glass technology allows a single piece double curved screen that not only works aerodynamically, but looks amazing.
