John Mayall —Rolling with the Blues – Live—Indigo IGODD004
John Mayall should need not introduction, of course, the main
man for the blues in the UK since the 60s. This double CD set was
first issued back in 2003, comprising live recordings from John’s
own private collection, and this is a welcome reissue.
John has had a long and varied career, but in some ways the
twenty-two tracks here manage to represent most of it. The first
CD contains material recorded in 1972 and 1973, from the time
when John was flirting with jazz, having moved away from the
succession of guitar stars he had been best known for in the previous decade. He has Freddie Robin-
son on guitar here – known for his time with Little Walter - but he is not the focus as such. John’s
bands also included saxmen Clifford Solomon in ‘72 and Red Holloway in ‘73, both vastly experi-
enced at both jazz and R’n’B – and Keef Hartley is on drums.
Holloway also crops up on the opening track of CD2, from 1980, but the remainder of the material
here comes from a Blues Breakers Reunion tour featuring Mick Taylor on guitar (Mick succeeded
Peter Green in Mayall’s band). Although the sound is at times rather different from the 60s outfit,
‘Sitting Here Alone’ has all the fervour of the 60s and proceedings finish with a reworking of Fred-
die King’s ‘The Stumble’, formerly Green’s guitar showcase.
So, although the “Beano” album is still the one with which to make John’s initial acquaintance, once
you’ve acquired the taste, do by all means investigate this.

Jack Broadbent—I Love Your Rock and Roll—Crows Feet
(Single)
Jack was born in 1988 in Lincolnshire but was based in Canada
for a while and is due to tour with Little Feat next year. He is a
singer, acoustic and slide guitarist, and songwriter working in
blues, folk and rock and roll styles. When the pandemic struck,
he had recently released his well-received album “Moonshine
Blue”, and any touring in its wake was swiftly curtailed. Now,
along comes this new track, available as a digital single.
‘I Love Your Rock And Roll’ is from his forthcoming album due for release in the Spring and is a
catchy, ever so slightly relaxed boogie based number, with slide of course. A nice foretaste that
augurs well for the new album.
