Into the blue
Where: Vilanculos, Bazaruto Archipelago
What: The sea views, severely sloping stand, and trees are the defining factors of Pontao Merapi. There is a rich mixture of culture, tradition, design and ornamentation, with strong east coast African influences, especially Swahili style – an ode of sorts to the sense of adventure, trading and spice routes of times gone by. Amatuli in Kramerville, Johannesburg and Phillip Eloff of Eloff Gallery in White River were responsible for this eclectic look. The owners were inspired by what they saw locals doing with their limited resources and incorporated local elements into the building. Mosquito gauze replaced glass, and heavy wooden shutters and doors (protection against cyclones), were carved by village crafters.
