Impact of Human Pandemics of COVID-19 on the Mental
Health of Serbia
As the coronavirus pandemic rapidly sweeps across the world, it is inducing a considerable
degree of fear, worry and concern in the population at large and among certain groups in
particular, such as older adults, care providers and people with underlying health conditions.
In public mental health terms, the main psychological impact to date is elevated rates of stress
or anxiety. The analysis shows that the pandemic has led to increased economic uncertainty,
increased unemployment and underemployment pressure, increased income uncertainty, and
different degrees of employment pressure and economic difficulties.
These difficulties have stimulated different levels of mental health problems, ranging from
perceived insecurity (environmental, food safety, etc.), worry, fear, to stress, anxiety,
depression, etc. With the symptoms of psychological distress are more obvious among
disadvantageous groups; and mental health problems have caused behavior changes, and
various stress behaviors such as protective behaviors and resistive behaviors.
This paper presents the extent of the impact of the pandemic on the development of mental
instability and current diagnostic possibilities. Subpopulations necessary for planning short-
term intervention in the organizational, informative and medical areas were identified.
A psychiatric guide for immediate support and assistance was proposed. There are no studies
on investigation of impact of human pandemics of COVID-19 on the mental development of
people in Serbia in 2020 to 2023.
