The introduction of Book crossing
<Book Sharing x Book Crossing campaign> Through the power of the internet and its interactive nature to share books, we aim to encourage DBers to share the joy of reading, allowing the reading community to gravitate together. Book crossing, translated literally from the Chinese term, means the “drift and sharing of books”. Such campaigns began in the 1960’s in Europe, where readers put specific notes on the books they no long need and put them at certain public locations, providing free reading for interested parties. The next readers will, after reading, put the books back where they came from as instructed by the original notes, allowing it to continue to drift.
Every Saturday afternoon, a little Book Crossing Booth appears in South Plaza, with an eye-catching red mail box and a few boxes of books. Jonathan and a few other youngsters of DreamChasers is currently running a book sharing and crossing campaign, which has begun to capture DBers’ attention.
There is a non-stop inflow of books from residents. Within a couple of hours, we have already received dozens of books, filling up many cargo boxes. Jonathan checks the books in the boxes and says, “There are very good books. I bought some of these when I was in Canada. It will be fantastic to have others share the joy of reading them.”
Jonathan introduces that every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday in May, they will be running the Book Crossing campaign. Book donors can record online the details of the books they donate. Dream Chasers will provide a set of codes for the donors to put on the books for donation. Of course they can send the books to the volunteers at the book crossing station, who will help them with the input and labels. The books will be put at the book crossing stations for interested readers to pickup. After being read, these books will return to the book crossing station allowing to drift to continue.
Jonathan says, “Book crossing activity aims to promote the reading culture in the community, allowing books to drift among DB residents, passing on the joy of reading, sharing and mutual support.” Books spread knowledge and culture, book crossing campaign propagates neighbourhood support in DB. Jonathan hopes to change DB with the power of book crossing.
