“I’m sorry if I put you ill at ease,” the man said.

“You see, there is a man in jail that killed my brother, because my brother killed his brother.

I understand you saw the whole thing.”

“I darn near got myself killed that night too,” I said.

“I understand this has put you in quite a position”, he offered.

“From all I could see, the whole bunch had drunk too much alcohol,” I told him.

“It was just a very unfortunate accident,” I explained.

“Well, I guess the courts will see what has to be done with it now,” the man shook my hand

as he stood and before he left, he said,

“I worried about Travis since he was fifteen. He was always a little wild and on the trail of

               adventure.”

The man held his hat in both hands and looked at the floor for a moment. Then he walked out. I

left my money on the table, took one last sip of coffee. I suddenly didn’t want to finish my

               breakfast.

                   CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

Rosemarie admired the gray two year old, as much as any horse she’d ever raised.

The young horse was easy to work with and a willing student. As she worked with the colt, her

mind wandered from the death of her father to the disapperarance of her brother.

“What could have happened to him?” She had asked the men who still continued to look for

the boy. They had no answer to give her. She wanted to do something but all she could do was

pray for his safety and his homecoming. She wanted to believe that he was somewhere safe but

her luck had not been very good lately.

                                                                                                          138
