“It is no different,” I told him.
“How does a man who is not lazy, ask his Patron if he can get a wife?” he asked.
“He simply asks the boss, if there is room for a good family on the ranch,” I answered.
“Patron? He asked, “Is there room on your ranch for a man who is not lazy and has a
family?”
“Si. Siempere,” I said.
With that he let out a loud yell and swung his big sombrero over his head and spun his horse in
circles.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
She saw us coming from the other side of the arroyo and cautiously approached us. Shading
her eyes with her hand, she soon recognized me.
“Señor,” she said,
“You come! Thank you for accepting my mares and sending the money. It was very useful.”
“Thank you, Señorita, for sending the mares. And Juan,” I responded.
“How is Juan?” she asked, “Why he did not come?”
“Juan is doing well. He never seems to age,” I said.
“Señorita, I asked Juan to stay at the ranch to take care of the lleguas y potrillos, until our
return.” Also, I did not know if he would be in trouble if he returned to Mexico.”
“He is no longer in trouble here, Señor.”
“Juan is a good man and a good friend,” I said then I continued,
“This is Gilberto Martinez. He works for me and he is a very good horseman.”
She smiled at Gilberto and acknowledged him.
