*About ½ of clinic patients would not have been considered for an MRI, either because they are post-op follow-ups, or pre-op second
visit. These visits were removed from the denominator to ensure that the total number of visits were not over-estimated, which would
have artificially lowered the percentage of MRI utilization.
The above Table shows the quarterly averages for MRI utilization by eligible patients* in the Shoulder
and Upper Limb Unit. Exceeding 25% would not automatically indicate overutilization but would have
triggered an in-depth review of the Unit’s utilization to ensure protocols are followed.
