Max saw the cat all alone inside the
house and it was watching him

steadily with its ‘glittering eyes’. The
cat therefore looked frightening.
Moreover, since it had been left
alone with no food it could be
hungry, and so dangerous: when
Max tried to kill the spider, ‘the cat
‘pounced, open its jaws and
devoured it’.
