Wily Hermes emerges from the grotto’s safety to nature’s dangers to sunlight’s splendour. His emergence sings to his Gate Lurker epithet as he crosses the threshold towards everything mundane and the profane, fulfilling his innate desire to experience romantically his imagination’s presence. A presence transforming and enchanting things, sojourning from the earthly towards the heavenly, from the tortoise’s sacrifice to the lyre’s gift, from speech’s sacrifice to lyric song in a mytho-erotic marriage with lyric poesy. Poesy as lyric song and song as lyric poesy, whose Hermetic spirit dwells amidst the divine and the mundane, in the unsaid between verse and verse, as silence 3⁄4 unbreath.
Hermes is foremost ingenious creator inspiring genius in song and poesy. Marriage of Apollo’s poesy and oracle, ecstatic magic and verb, whose mind shall dwell in the evergreen summits of Mount Cythareon, abode of the singing Muses, and in Delphi’s Temple. Yet Hermes’ lyric poesy shall cease as abruptly as it arose, for the art of ποίησις, like the herms, is born at frightful crossroads. It incessantly twists, seeking, yet reversing itself, invariably dwelling amidst the divine and the mundane.98 In this,
