Judaeo-Christian
Divine Creation out of the Word
Raphael. The Creation of the Animals, 1518.
Despite the lovely beauties of Stoicism’s rational exegesis and Philo’s lovely synthesis, creation out of Yahweh’s spontaneous, effortless, eternal, mythic Word supersedes them theologically and historically. What flourishes from the diversely written Genesis narratives, is the necessity to emphasize Yahweh’s kerygma, his absolute free will, and sovereignty over creation and salvation history through His active and dynamic Word.116 What is created, Anderson reiterates, is something precisely because it has come “out of nothing” by Yahweh, by his omnipotent Word, creating a unilateral and subordinate relationship in Judaeo-Christianity.117
Creation, a temporal event 3⁄4 marking the beginning of history, and unfolding God’s purpose through history’s drama118
116 His Word is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb. 4:12; cf. Rev. 19:13-15). Quoted from Anderson, B.W. The Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible. It unfolds with the call of Abraham, the deliverance from Egypt, the guidance through the wilderness, the inheritance of the Promised Land. Anderson, B.W. The Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible.
