the everlasting conformist, obeys, to ascend, is to seek his own reward heavenward in the Divine Dominion. And, thus, Lucifer, unlike the Angel of the Good, mirrors humankind’s impulse to query, to disobey, to rebel, to seek its own secular, self-serving dominion in experience’s domain. And it is this very motion that the European Enlightenment, the Lucifer of western thought, demands: an all-too rational approach, an all-too rational revolt, yet a Rational Romanticism nonetheless in its frenetic impulse towards pure reason, the very antithesis of Romanticism’s Storm and Stress, whose spontaneity and adoration of sublimity and nature kindles the Enlightenment’s counter revolt.
And precisely beyond the European Enlightenment, this Rational Romanticism, that Blake’s SI’s wingless child flees away from. Why? Kant’s “Sapere Aude’s” voracity reduces everyone to a cog, a part: a mere mechanism, blue labyrinthine. And as SII’s wingless child, suddenly disappears from Innocence’s Realm away from Experience’s maze while gazing at the Piper-Bard, the Memory of Being, Blake’s SE’s child rests on the Piper Poet’s head, his flourishing prophetic mind, abode of the Holy Word.
