Quintessence is equally present in the five-pointed Epsilon, the potent 5th letter of the Hebrew, Greek and Latin alphabet, and the five-pointed M turned Eagle. The Epsilon’s splendour107 whose five points had once symbolized the five pointed cross, when rotated to the right, passes into the M. First, as form of the lily, second, as of the eagle. Eagle whose substance is the language inscribed in the M. The anagram DIL108 brings forth, in five times seven (5x7) vowels and consonants the Wisdom of Solomon I:I 3⁄4 Diligite Iustitiam Qui Iudicatis Terram, “Love justice, you rulers of the earth.”109 Thirty-five letters that parallel the 35 figures of the Divine Pageant representing the Old and New Testament books, as Hopper posits, counterbalancing the Justice of the Eagle to the Justice of Eden, and the Eagle of Monarchy to the pageant of the Militant Church.110 Yet, what does Dante’s convocation of number veil and seek to adumbrate? What ephemerally stirs behind that haunting gaze, its deep-dark eyes? What is the relationship between the 7x5 of justice and 7x55 of the wonderful beauties? Indeed, the 7x5 reveals Dante’s much revered and sought-after imperial justice. Justice of the microcosm manifested, evermore, through the Words of Solomon and, thereafter, through the dance of Dante’s Eagle-forming just monarchs in the Commedia. Thirty-five consonants and vowels whose 7x5 expression of global justice participates tenfold in the macrocosm’s 7x55 enunciation of universal justice (i.e. 7x5=35; 5x10=55). 7x55 engenders, in turn, 385 in virtue of number eleven (35 letters x 11 = 385) the sum total of Dante’s 515 digits. Let’s remember that 385 results from the addition of the squared Decad: if the successive numbers from the Monad to the Decad are squared and then added up, they will generate 385 or 7 x 55.111 Thus, all things generated from the Monad move toward the wonderful beauties of eternal justice ever present, ever being in the macrocosm’s 7x55 beyond the microcosm’s 7x5.

107 The magic power of five received the testimony of Plutarch in the E at Delphi. The 5 points of the E, also the fifth letter in the Egyptian, Phoenician, Greek and Latin alphabets, together with its position in the oracle, gave the number 5 a great power over all things.
