alphabet letter 3⁄4 ever alluding to the five-pointed M of Mary, Monarch, Millennium and Eagle, formed by the souls of the just. Five, heart-song, love- song of cordialis 3⁄4 Christ’s heart 3⁄4 never coming to pass, bidding men and women to behold Biblical passages written in 5:15. Substantial, lingering number, never imperfect, seemingly formed from aether’s fifth splendid caress. Why? Only the Same blooms forth from the Same, from its very quintessence. For when we hear ‘the one radiates the five and six,’ what not this verse embalms? O winged Hermeneutists, wanderers now beyond Olympus! Carefully listen amid the loftier forms and spheres! Notice how the one transforms! Is it not an astonishing transformation of expansion? For its intrinsic nature shall always remain a golden field. What symbolic alteration in the prophecy’s heart when one radiates the five! Towards its kindred word-logos-Christ, towards its 5-pointed E, M, Lily and Eagle it sets forth. Its presence superimposing the One! Thus, lifting our dim eyes towards Dante’s lit gaze, the qualities of 515 as mirror of Virgil’s 333135 suddenly alter to 555. The ancient windy gust, too, of its Grecian spirit wanders off from its Iota-I to Nu-V to Lambda-L as from FIE, to FVE to FLE. Yet why the thrust from airy five to perfect six? Five times six derives thirty, the number that stands for the lambda in Greek Gematria. The name thus expands and contracts

135 Hollander and Russo argue that Dante’s Christian 515 represents a latter-day version of Virgil’s 333, the divinely sanctioned Roman empire. It counters the 666 of the Beast of Apocalypses. “Dante believed that the “eagle,” symbol of the empire which evolved from Aeneas, had lasted exactly 333 years after the birth of Christ in the fullness of time under Augustus, to its unspeakable departure from Europe, the result of well-meaning Constantine’s shameful dereliction. And thus the 333 years necessary, in Virgil’s calculation, for the founding of Rome, Aeneas to Romulus, were countered by, in Dante’s calculation, the 333 years from the empire’s greatest glory to its disgraceful abandonment of its rightful seat. The 333 that Dante apparently found at hand in Brunetto’s book would likely have seemed to him, in light of Virgil’s positive use of that number, to suggest a sum (333 + 333) equal to the number of the beast. The negative political implications of the resulting 666 (Aeneas to Romulus, Christ to Constantine), reflecting the Donation and its dire result, are not difficult to grasp. It is precisely as an answer to such a dilemma that the 515, the “heir” of the “eagle” (Purg. 33.37-39), will manifest himself in order to restore the glory of God’s chosen empire.” Hollander, Robert and Russo Heather. Purgatorio 33.43: Dante’s 515 and Virgil’s 333.
